In 2022, Olga Smirnova made headlines when she left the Bolshoi, and Russia, after denouncing the war in Ukraine. Since then, she has quietly built a new life and career in Amsterdam. Now she returns to New York to dance Giselle with American Ballet Theatre, a role she’s performed many times. Her partner at the Metropolitan Opera House this evening (June 21) will be Daniel Camargo.

I had the pleasure to speak with her and sit in on one of their rehearsals a few days ago. In this Q&A for @fjordreview Smirnova reflects on her decision to leave, her new life in Amsterdam, Dutch National Ballet, and the story she and Camargo are building together in Giselle.
