Andersen was 22-23, and still in school. He had given up his dream to become a dancer, actor, singer, or playwright. He became a frequent visitor to the parlors of the Copenhagen bourgeoisie. In 1829, he published his first story, “A Journey on Foot from Holmen’s Canal to the East Point of Amager.”
